I know our mothers need to be kept away from store bought yeast, but what if someone in your house brews their own beer or mead? Both beer and mead use "store bought" yeast. Will this impact my mother? There is no way to keep them separate in our tiny space.

This is a good question. I'm not very familiar with the process of home brewing, but my limited understanding is that the fermentation part takes place in sealed jars that allow for air to escape, but will not let any air in. Is that correct? If this is the case, it's possible that as your home brews off-gas they will interfere with your counter mother. Because I don't have personal experience with this scenario, I cannot say with certainty what will happen if the home brews and a wild-yeast mother share the same airspace. I do think it's best to be cautious, and that they should be kept apart from one another as much as possible.

Hi Ashley - thank you. Some home brews take place in sealed containers that off gas, others are "open fermented" much like sourdough. And our fruit-based mead (honey wine) is definitely open fermented (it smells so good in my house!). My husband is an avid brewer and we have 4 batches of mead fermenting right now, in the same space. Hmmm... not sure what to do. I guess I will try it and report back to let you know how it went. Thank you again!

I hope it all goes well. You said you started you mother on Sunday--are you seeing any activity of any sort? It's a little early yet, but I'm just curious. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this works for you!

Hi Ashley - I am seeing some activity, just started today! Woohoo! And it has a nice sour smell going on too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't go wonky. :) Thanks for the encouragement and assistance.
