After acquiring all my equipment and good flour, I started my Mother today. I expected a watery result in the bowl, but it looks like a paste (3/8 cup flour & 1/4 cup water). Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. For the first few days, your mother will be thick. Around day 3 or 4, your mother will start to ferment and “loosen up”. Which type of flour are you using?
